Benahavís luxury real estate ranked the most valuable in Spain

If you are a savvy real estate investor with your finger on the pulse of the property market in Southern Spain, you’ll be aware that luxury homes and indeed land for sale in Estepona, Marbella and Benahavís (the trinity of towns collectively known as the Golden Triangle) is consistently ranked as one of the most expensive, not only in Southern Spain but throughout the entire Peninsula.

Recent research published by Idealista.com shows that the average price for luxury real estate in Q4 of 2022 was 1.86 million Euros. The article also named the exclusive residential development ‘La Zagaleta’ in Benahavís as being most expensive area to buy a house in southern Spain (and indeed the entire Spanish Peninsula). The second most expensive property hotspot on the Costa del Sol is Marbella, with Sotogrande and Estepona hot on its heels at number three.

Benahavís real estate prices

A recent report tracking property price trends shows that the average price per square metre of property in Benahavís reached an all-time high of 4.089€ in February 2023. This represents a substantial 6.15% increase compared to the figure for May 2022 which stood at 3,852€ per square metre.  In comparison, average real estate prices in Marbella for the same periods stood at 4,309€ in February 2023, a slightly higher 10.74% increase compared to prices for May 2022.

About Benahavís

Let’s take a look at why Benahavís consistently takes pole position in the property market and what makes it a perennial favourite amongst residents, real estate investors and those who have been lucky enough to find a house and snap it up as a holiday home.

The village is ideally located, sandwiched between Estepona and San Pedro de Alcantara, around 10 minutes’ drive inland via a winding country lane, traversing countryside and rivers. There are lots of opportunities for those who enjoy walking, trekking and horse riding in the area, and for taking in the incredible views across dramatic ravines, streams and dense forests. Along the winding road, you can find an almost concealed entrance you gain access to natural plunge pools along the Guadalmina River valley, that offer a welcome respite in the heat of the summer.

Upon arriving in the village, you’ll be enchanted by the impeccable traditional whitewashed buildings and pedestrianized streets bursting with independent shops and restaurants. The preponderance of eateries is so extreme for such a small area that the village is often referred to as the ‘dining room of Andalucia’. There is also a thriving art scene, with artists, potters and sculptures, one notable gallery offering bespoke design is Galería David Marshall.

Property in Benahavís

We’ve mentioned the village centre with traditional townhouses and villas, side by side with the bars, shops and restaurants. However, on the outskirts you’ll find modern apartments, hotels and villas, surrounded by countryside, here it is possible to find a superb selection of high-quality luxury real estate.   Also, part of the municipality of Benahavís is La Zagaleta Resort and Country Club, a sweeping private mountainside estate.

La Zagaleta Resort and Country Club

Any experienced real estate agent on the Costa del Sol will tell you that a major contributing factor to the high prices of Benahavís property is the existence of the uber-exclusive La Zagaleta Resort and Country Club, one of the most privileged and expensive resorts in Europe. There are many rumours about the secretive and wealthy inhabitants of La Zagaleta – Rod Stewart, Athina Onassis and Vladimir Putin spring to mind – which are never confirmed or denied, as the development is one of the most private places on earth.  Let’s just say that it is home to some of the most wealthy and influential people in the world.

Set in 900 hectares of countryside, located just a stone’s throw from Benahavís village centre and only 10 minutes from Marbella, this former hunting estate (previously owned by Saudi Arabian arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi) boasts two private golf courses, an equestrian centre and riding club, clubhouses and restaurants, all set within a gated community protected by private security.

Golfers’ paradise

On the Costa del Sol, you are never very far from a world-class golf course! In addition to La Zagaleta’s private golf courses, Benahavís offers easy access to a number of superb golf courses, including Los Flamingo Golf Resort home to stunning golf properties such as this luxury villa occupying a coveted frontline position with views across the green towards the sea, La Quinta Golf & Country Club offering a choice of equally impressive properties, and also the well-established Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club to name a few.

Easy access to everyday amenities

Of course, Benahavís is so much more than a countryside escape, it is also the perfect location to enjoy the benefits of the outdoor Mediterranean lifestyle. Everything you could possibly need is close to hand within the municipality or very close by, for example international schools, medical facilities, supermarkets and shopping opportunities can all be reached within a short 10 to 15 minutes’ drive.

The world is your oyster

There are several nearby commercial centres offering the essentials for everyday living. Located just a few minutes from La Zagaleta, there is the Monte Halcones development with its own shopping centre, restaurants and banks et. Also, at the bottom of the winding mountain road, just 2 minutes to the East, you’ll find the Guadalmina shopping centre with a good choice of high-quality amenities and restaurants. A few minutes further on, there is the bustling town of San Pedro de Alcantara, followed by Puerto Banús and finally within 20 minutes you’ll be in Marbella.  Alternatively, a short 15-minute drive to the West you’ll reach the colourful coastal town of Estepona.

This means you have the option of enjoying the high-octane nightlife available on the Costa del Sol, taking up water sports or lazing on the many beaches, visiting designer boutiques, dining out at a different restaurant, tapas bar, bistro every day or simply enjoying the relaxing ambiance of one of the most attractive villages in Southern Spain…. If not the world!
